What are the odds?

It’s estimated that around 10,000 people a week choose 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 as their lottery numbers.

This despite the odds that any 6 numbers being drawn are exactly the same as any other combination. If they ever come up (there are 13,983,816 possible combinations of six numbers from 49 numbers so the lottery odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 13,983,816), chances are you’ll be disappointed with having to share your loot with so many others.

Oxford professor of mathematics, Marcus Du Sautoy, says: ‘My advice is to pick consecutive numbers, like 31, 32, 33. Not many people do, but it is just as likely as any other combination.’

The logic behind this was also used by Apple to redesign its iTunes ‘shuffle’ software. After some customers complained Apple made the randomiser software ‘less random’, preventing iPods from playing a track more than once.

But when it comes to such large odds, does logic really matter? In 1998, unemployed Scot John Roberts was planning to spend his last pound on a meat pie. Instead, he spent it on a lucky dip lottery ticket – and a £3m win was more than adequate compensation for missing out on the pie!

TeleVision Centre

Windsor is now delighted to be offering Dieci telehandlers as part of its extensive product portfolio.

Dieci was the first company in Europe to produce telescopic handlers in 1983 and are well known for being innovators in the field. Dieci Ltd is involved in the development of machines tailored to the UK and with well over 36 models in its complete range, has extensive knowledge of industrial, building and agricultural sectors. Although seen as a niche product, telehandlers have been used particularly in farming, for a number of years. Good ground clearance and four-wheel drive means this telehandlers can make excellent progress in any conditions or terrain. The visibility and versatility of a telehandler also makes it a good choice for varied applications. Dieci has also worked on minimizing machine downtime, increasing productivity and maximize customer revenue through the use of proven components (Dan Foss, Iveco, Hurth/Spicer, and Rexroth) along with an 85% commonality of spare parts across the range. Windsor director, Andy Lane, believes the new 3.3 to 4.0 tonnes equipment can become a valuable asset to the right customer. Said Andy: “Telehandlers offer the best way of reaching out across distances of up to 12.5 meters and the Dieci range is a proven piece of kit that’s well built and highly productive. From builders’ merchants to food manufacturers, we think our customers will come to love it.”

Doosan’s Other Animal

The world renowned Bobcat brand stands for proven dependability and rugged durability, with a tough product range helping it earn its reputation as “One Tough Animal.”

Less well known is its connection to forklift manufacturer Doosan, which acquired the business in a what was the largest overseas acquisition in Korea’s history.

In 2007, Doosan Infracore paid $4.9 billion to Ingersoll Rand for the Bobcat business, becoming one of the top ten global manufacturers of construction and utility equipment in the process, and taking on a combined network of over 3,500 dealers worldwide and 20 manufacturing plants in the U.S., Europe and China.

To most onlookers, the timing of the acquisition was a surprise and with the benefit of hindsight, the sale most definitely happened at the top of the market – less than a month later bad news from French bank BNP Paribas triggered a sharp rise in the cost of credit, and signalled to much of the world the start of the global credit crunch. Despite the resulting market downturn, Doosan has done much to keep the Bobcat brand as a market leader, investing in a host of new products and new engine technology which will also cross over into the forklift models (see page two).

Its latest M-Series skid steer loader and VersaHandler telescopic tool carrier have also been on show on the Doosan stand at this year’s IMHX, the UK’s largest Intralogistics show.

The Bobcat telehandler combines the speed, agility and strength of a skid-steer loader with the extended reach of a forklift. More versatile than a standard telehandler, the VersaHandler telescopic tool carrier (TTC) is a multipurpose utility machine designed to handle tough jobs effortlessly and efficiently. Ideal for jobs that not only demand high levels of accessibility and manoeuvrability, but also require more lift height, a longer reach and the ability to lift heavier loads than smaller loaders and compact excavators. The hydraulic systems on the  M-Series loaders have been engineered for higher standard flow and pressure, which gives attachments more power to work more quickly. Size, horsepower and cubic-inch displacement are matched to the loader’s rated operating capacity, balance and weight — producing a loader that can outperform higher-horsepower machines. The skid-steer models also offer a two-speed option which boosts the maximum travel speed from 7.4 mph in to 11 mph.

Dealer of The Year

Our delighted MD, Stephen Burton, had a double reason to celebrate when attending a gala dinner arranged by Korean forklift manufacturer, Doosan.

Not only was Windsor the proud recipient of a 2012 ‘Dealer of the Year’ award, presented on behalf of Doosan by Dr KB Park, but we were also praised for the best ever result by a Doosan dealer.

Stephen praised the hard work of all the team and congratulated Doosan on their recent progress, including the introduction of their latest reach trucks and new warehouse equipment range.

“This is a great recognition of our performance,” said Stephen. “We work closely with our suppliers to ensure we are fully up to speed with their product ranges and future development and we know they place a great deal of importance on our feedback, so a result like this shows our relationship is working very well.”

Doosan were exhibiting at IMHX, the industry’s main logistics event at the NEC. Amongst the guests was Doosan Corporation CEO, Jim Bemowski, who congratulated Windsor on a superb performance. Said Jim: “The guys at Windsor are great ambassadors for our brand and we’re delighted to present them with a well deserved award.”
